Bio – Marc Muellbauer 2017
London born, Berlin based Marc Muellbauer works both as a bass player and composer/band leader. To date, he has recorded eight albums for ECM as a member of the Julia Hülsmann Trio the latest being „Sooner and Later“. Apart from writing for and playing with the trio, he composes and arranges for the Wood and Steel Trio, his nine-piece band Marc Muellbauer’s Kaleidoscope and the electric guitar trio Polychrome. He is also a versatile sideman, working in settings ranging from jazz bands like Lisbeth Quartett and Eva Klesse Quartett, electronic music with Moritz v. Oswald to studio and live work with songwriter Klaus Hoffmann.
While Muellbauer’s background is in jazz and rock, he both studied classical double bass with Prof. Michael Wolf at Hochschule der Künste Berlin, and has postgrad degree in jazz from the same school (by then re-named University of the Arts Berlin). Muellbauer also worked for several years in the field of contemporary composed music with ensemble united berlin.
Marc Muellbauer has been teaching bass and improvisation since 1998 at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and at the Jazz Institute Berlin since its inception in 2005 until 2020.
